Another anticorruption & crime watchdog established by government

The Coordination Council on Fighting and Preventing Corruption and Crime was formally established with its regulation being published in Friday’s issue of the Official Gazette, following a Government ordinance adopted on November 26, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the regulation, the main task of the Coordination Council will be to monitor the efficiency of the authorities engaged in combating and preventing crime and corruption. The Council’s make-up includes Deputy Prime Minister Valentin Mejinschi, Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea, Intelligence and Security Service Director Artur Resetnicov, Justice Minister Vitalie Parlog, Interiors Minister Gheorghe Papuc, Customs Service Director Viorel Melnic, Border Guards Service Director Igor Colenov, and Chamber of Accoounts Chair Ala Popescu. The Council will coordinate the activities of the law enforcement bodies involved in combating these phenomena with a view to improving them. Under the Council’s scrutiny will be such areas as public order, trafficking in humans, prevention of illegal migration, the country’s security and defense capacity, etc. At the same time, the Council will collaborate with the nongovernmental organizations working in the fields of human rights, fighting corruption, human trafficking and illegal migration, and others. The main activity directions of the Council will be to analyze the state of criminality, monitor anticorruption plans, and coordinate the activity of the law enforcement bodies. To improve efficiency, the newly established organization will cooperate with the Supreme Magistracy Council and the judicial bodies. The Council will meet whenever deemed appropriated, but not rarer than once a month. According to the Government, establishing the Council to assist the executive will ensure the consistency of anticorruption plans, strategies and agreements.
