Head of Parliament Andrian Candu insists on the complete exclusion of the parliamentary immunity. The Speaker developed the issue in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
“We discussed with the colleagues from the parliamentary alliance. We consider that the parliamentary immunity should be fully removed. We will draft a bill to amend the Constitution, which will stipulate immunity only for political activity and the statements made as an MP,” stated Andrian Candu.
The Speaker considers that granting full parliamentary immunity to MPs wasn’t right as this notion was misinterpreted. “The parliamentary immunity was abused. The MPs cannot benefit from parliamentary immunity when they drive under the influence of alcohol or commit other ordinary offenses. All the people are equal before the law,” he stated.
The Government last month approved a bill to amend the Constitution so that the parliamentary immunity is limited. Under the bill, the MPs will be investigated or arrested without the legislative body’s consent if they are caught red-handed or there is an irrevocable sentence against them. The bill was submitted to Parliament for consideration.
