Andrian Candu seeks support from U.S. for completing reforms

Head of Parliament Andrian Candu asked the United States to offer assistance in finishing the process of implementing the reform agenda undertaken by Moldova for coming closer to the EU. He made such a request in a meeting with Scott Cullinane and Naz Durakoglu, of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the U.S. House of Representatives, IPN reports.

According to the Parliament’s press service, Andrian Candu reaffirmed the Moldovan political class’ commitment to continue doing reforms on the path of European integration and to implement the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement. He noted that the reformation pace must be accelerated so as to reach the living standards expected by the people and the development partners.

The Speaker said that Moldova is interested in being included as a beneficiary country in the Compact II program of the Millennium Challenge Corporation.

The American officials reiterated the United States’ support for Moldova in the process of implementing reforms and encouraged the Moldovan authorities to continue doing them. Scott Cullinane and Naz Durakoglu came to Moldova to familiarize themselves with the political and economic developments in the regional context. The Subcommittee for Europe and Eurasia of the U.S. House of Representatives is to hold debates on the situation in Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia.

Over the last 22 years, Moldova received about US$1.2 billion in financial assistance from the United States.
