The Venice Commission’s opinion about the draft law to introduce the mixed-member electoral system in Moldova is marked by political tendencies, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu stated in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“I never doubted the professionalism and correctness of the experts of the Venice Commission, but particular political tendencies can be spotted sometimes,” stated the Speaker.

According to Andrian Candu, together with the proposal concerning the mixed-member electoral system in Moldova, the experts of the Venice Commission examined a bill to modify the electoral system in Georgia. “The Georgian Speaker said there is no political consensus. The Commission’s appraisal for Georgians was positive, while for us was negative because there is not political consensus in our country,” explained Andrian Candu.

The Speaker also said that Parliament will implement the recommendations related to legal aspects, not yet those concerning the broad political consensus. “There has never been broad political consensus in the Republic of Moldova since the declaration of Independence. We have a polarized society. The Venice Commission’s opinion contains two types of recommendations, political and legal. We will take into account all the recommendations of a legal character and will implement them so that we have a good electoral system and the elections are conducted in a correct and transparent way,” stated Andrian Candu.
