Moldova’s Parliament will play a pro-active role in continuing the European course and will assume the related responsibilities, including adjusting the national legislation to the Community acquis, Speaker Andrian Candu said in a meeting Cord Meier-Klodt, who is responsible for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Middle Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, IPN reports.

Andrian Candu said the implementation of the Association Agenda with the EU means doing reforms, primarily in the justice sector and for fighting corruption, in the financial-baking sector, the public administration and the social sphere. “It is important to ensure the functionality of the state institutions, while the political discussions should be kept for the future as the people are waiting for concrete results from the government,” he stated.

The main subjects discussed in the meeting were the priorities of the parliamentary agenda, the economic and sociopolitical situation in Moldova at central and local levels, including in Transnistria, and the key measures that must be taken by the Moldovan authorities to continue the reforms to modernize the country.

Andrian Candu thanked the German authorities for the substantial and unprecedented support provided to the Moldovan authorities in the European integration process both at bilateral level and within the EU. Speaking about the local development, he pleaded for establishing partnerships between the Moldovan and German settlements with a view to stimulating the involvement of the local authorities in the European integration process.

Cord Meier-Klodt welcomed the formation of the new government in Moldova, voicing hope that the executive will continue the reforms on the path to European integration. He noted that Germany will take over the rotating presidency of the OSCE in 2016 and assured that Germany will continue to provide the support needed to strengthen the contacts between the two sides of the Nistru River. “We want Moldova to really become a success story and to develop in peace and stability,” stated the German official.

Cord Meier-Klodt is in Moldova on a four-day fact-finding visit.
