Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu considers the protest organizers are not sincere when they say that they protest against the replacement of the electoral system and actually pursue other goals. The issue was developed in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
“I do not criticize the protest, which is a democratic process. The people who take to the streets have the right to express their opinion. When there is a cause, there is also success in the protest. But half a year ago, those from the PPPDA, PLDM and PAS spoke about the necessity of changing the electoral system. When we invited them to the discussions, they refused categorically. I understand that they do not want to cooperate with the government, but stating and defending their position is something else,” said the Speaker.
Andrian Candu also said that the PDM does not give up the idea of introducing the uninominal voting system and will make everything possible for this system to be introduced by 2022. “We had to achieve a broad consensus with the opposition. That’s why we accepted the mixed-member system. But we should not forget that the uninominal system was also adopted by Parliament by 52 votes,” he stated.
Asked about the PAS leader Maia Sandu’s intention to sue him for saying that she had a nocturnal meeting with Grigore Petrenco at the party’s head office, Andrian Candu answered with two questions addressed to Maia Sandu: “I want Missis Sandu to say what sum she offered for organizing the protests and this was rejected in the meeting and why her proposal to mount a march and dance a round dance around the Parliament Building was rejected?”
The Speaker denied the information according to which the replacement of the electoral system is the reason why the European Parliament delays the provision of macro-financial assistance to Moldova. “The financing for the Republic of Moldova depends on the reforms assumed by the government. There are several conditions that we need to fulfill and the financing will come,” said Andrian Candu.
