The Moldovan authorities didn’t devote enough time to the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and this issue becomes increasing irrelevant for society, Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said in the opening of an international conference entitled “Resolution of the Transnistrian conflict: Qua vadis?”. The event was staged by the Foreign Policy Association of Moldova, IPN reports.
“The Transnistrian issue becomes less relevant for our society. When asked about Transnistria within polls, an increasing number of people say they do not know the issue or do not care. And here it is the blame of the political elites that devote less time to this subject,” stated Candu.
The Speaker admitted that the government didn’t devote sufficient attention for identifying a solution. “I’ve got the impression that we didn’t devote enough time to this issue so as to find solutions. Some even criticized us, saying we make concessions to the Transnistrian administration. It is not about concessions, but about the attempt to find compromise solutions for ensuring respect for the human rights and solving the problems of farmers and Romanian language schools in Transnistria,” he stated.
According to Candu, it is the task of the Parliament of Moldova to solve legislative problems related to the Transnistrian conflict settlement process. “A number of negotiators complained to me that they do not know the legal limits up to which they can discuss and take decisions. They are afraid not to make mistake and fear criminal liability. We are obliged to ensure their legal comfort,” said the Head of Parliament.
Andrian Candu also said that even if a dialogue with Tiraspol was started in 2016, the sides didn’t make much headway and the expectations are related to next year.
