The members of the National Resistance Movement ACUM, who came together in front of the Parliament Building to ask that the demands adopted on July 1, 2018 should be fulfilled, invited Speaker Andrian Candu to discussions, but this rejected the invitation. In a press briefing, the Speaker said yet that the mixed-member electoral system will not be annulled and recommended the opposition parties not to lose time protesting. He noted the Parliament of Moldova is concerned about the invalidation of the Chisinau early mayoral elections, IPN reports.

“By that decision adopted by Parliament last week, we entrusted the legal commission with the task of assessing the recent developments and of formulating recommendations and solutions for overcoming the problem during 60 days so that we no longer experience such cases,” stated the Speaker.

Asked about protesters’ demands, Andrian Candu said the mixed electoral system will not be annulled. “All the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, including those who take part in today’s protest in front of the Parliament Building, should realize that the mixed system will not be annulled and the upcoming parliamentary elections will be held based on this system. They should prepare for the mixed system and should identify candidates in the single-member constituencies in the country and abroad, should enter the political competition in the election campaign and should not lose time protesting, even if the protests are a democratic exercise,” he stated.

The participants in the protest mounted in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau on July 1 adopted a resolution by which they call on the government to validate the mayoral elections held in Chisinau, to annul the mixed electoral system ad to hold accountable the judges who decided to invalidate the elections. Otherwise, the National Resistance Movement ACUM will take peaceful civil disobedience actions.
