The amendment of the Constitution to enshrine the European integration course in it should not be conditioned, as some of the current parties aim to do. This amendment is aimed at ensuring the country’s irreversible path of European integration, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Reply” on Prime TV channel.
“We want to introduce into the Constitution provisions that will guarantee that the Republic of Moldova moves towards the European Union and that the European integration is our development model. If we have such provisions in the Constitution, any other law that does not correspond to this course risks being declared unconstitutional,” noted the Speaker.
Andrian Candu said they would vote to change the name of the official language in the Constitution, as the Liberal Party demands, but half of the Democratic parliamentary group and of society has a different opinion. “Why should we now confront if we all believe in the European integration, while the number of those who believe in the Romanian language is lower even if this is a scientific truth?” he wondered.
The politician noted that if the amendment is not voted this week, there will be no time available for returning to the issue. “If we vote it in a week or two weeks, we risk having it rejected by the President and having it sent back to Parliament, but we could no longer vote again on it. The procedure should be then covered from the very beginning. We will need the appraisal of the Constitutional Court first and will lose time,” stated Andrian Candu.
Political analyst Anatol Țăranu said such moments when one should act in the interests of the political opponents happen in politics, but the country’s interest is more important than the interparty struggle. The Democratic Party stands to gain in any situation – either the Constitution is amended or it is not amended.
Alexandru Solcan, the dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Political and Administrative Sciences of the State University of Moldova, said the enshrining of the European integration course in the Constitution is in the general interest that is above personal interests. This way they introduce the legal-political framework needed for the European integration of Moldova and no matter what government comes, this will be unable to thwart this course. The modification would eliminate the geopolitical cleavage that permanently marks the election campaigns and the political opponents in campaigns would address practical problems faced by the citizens.
