The European Parliament together with the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) staged a conference entitled “The role of parliamentary dialogue and mediation in political transition and peace processes”. In the event’s opening, Moldovan Speaker Andrian Candu gave a speech, IPN reports.

The Head of Parliament spoke about the role of liaison that the legislative bodies should play at internal level and in parliamentary diplomacy. He underlined the importance of parliamentary communication and dialogue in preventing conflicts and ensuring consensus in society.

Speaking about Moldova’s experience in internal crisis management, Andrian Candu said that Moldova can be considered an example in the case of the Autonomous Unit of Gagauzia. The legislature aims to soon set up a working group designed to ensure permanent communication between Moldova’s Parliament and the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. In the case of the Transnistrian region, Parliament didn’t use all the opportunities to prevent and then settle the dispute, but there is place for the better.

In the same event, the Bashkan of Gagauzia Irina Vlah spoke about the relations between the Autonomous Unit and Moldova’s Parliament.

CMI President Martti Ahtisaari, who is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said peace building is a permanent process, a team work that cannot be limited to the adoption of a resolution or statement. “Sustainable peace does not mean absence of violence, but the possibility for societies to develop and live in welfare. Without the support of Parliaments, inclusive and sustainable peace cannot be built,” he stated.

Within his official visit to Brussels, Andrian Candu is to meet with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and other European high-ranking officials.
