The parliamentary alliance that consists of 57 MPs is to choose five members of the Central Election Commission (CEC), while the opposition, which comprises 44 MPs, will designate three members of the Commission, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said at the end of the March 18 sitting of the legislature, IPN reports.
Andrian Candu stated that the terms in office of the CEC members expired in February and Parliament and the Head of State, who is to nominate one member, must initiate the procedure for naming the new members of the Commission.
He added that it is not mandatory, but he recommends that the future CEC president should be one of the members proposed by the opposition.
Though the terms of the CEC members expired, the Constitutional Court extended these until May given that new local elections are to be held in two communities.
