The candidate for mayor of Chisinau of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase called on the mayors and local councilors whose communities are supplied with water from the Nistru River to make common cause to prevent the hidden negotiations between the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities on the signing of the agreement on the functioning of the Nistrean Hydropower Complex, IPN reports.
In a news conference held in Vadul lui Voda town, on the bank of the Nistru, Andrei Nastase said there is a real risk that Ukraine will build hydropower plants on the Nistru and, as a result, the Moldovans will be deprived of important sources of water.
According to Andrei Nastase, the building of the hydropower plants can lead to a shortage of running water and of water for irrigating farmland and to a rise in water tariffs.
The candidate said the non-transparent negotiations on the agreement on the functioning of the complex, of which he informed civil society working in the environmental sector, show that the current government puts the group interests above the people’s interests.
Andrei Nastase also said that by such acts the government is causing an ecological catastrophe and endangers the security of the Republic of Moldova.
