Andrei Nastase should have occupied the seat of mayor of Chisinau municipality three days after the elections, municipal councilor of the Political Party “Our Party” Ilian Casu was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel.
The councilor said the process of validating the seat of mayor-elect Andrei Nastase should not be regarded from the angle of legal norms as the justice in Moldova is politically controlled. “We cannot exist without law, but we should look at things from the perspectives of the political class,” he stated.
Municipal councilor of the group of the European People’s Platform of Moldova Veaceslav Bulat wondered what electoral agitation is. He said that the whole city was full of banners urging to vote a particular candidate on the election day. “Was this campaigning on the election day or not? Earlier, all these banners were removed one day before the elections. Now there were pictures of the candidates calling on the electors to vote them on all the fences and billboards,” he stated, referring to the rumored reason of campaigning on the election day for which the seat of mayor wasn’t validated.
Jurist Pavel Midrigan said the Election Code makes a difference between urging of the people to vote and campaigning. “The encouragement of the citizens to exercise their right to vote is always welcome,” he noted.
Civic activist Nicolae Josan said a group of people gathered at the Centru branch of the Court of Chisinau, where the judgement that invalidated the seat of mayor of Andrei Nastase was passed, to show what is going on in the justice sector of Moldova.
After several hours of deliberations on June 19, the Centru branch of the Court of Chisinau municipality didn’t validate the results of the new mayoral elections in Chisinau. Present at the court, mayor-elect Andrei Nastase, who heads the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA), told the press that this is a perfidious game orchestrated by the current government, noting the decision of the ordinary court will be challenged.
