The success story of Moldova within the Eastern Partnership could become a less successful story, considers MEP Andi Cristea, who is the chairman of Parliamentary Committee for Association with Moldova. In a news conference on April 9 held in Chisinau, he said things should be improved, but for this to happen political will, progress and concrete steps are needed, IPN reports.

Andi Cristea noted that the people are waiting for the problems in the financial banking sector to be solved and for the reforms to be implemented. “There is a danger of deviation and Moldova, in a situation that is not desired by us, could turn from a success story of the Eastern Partnership and the European Neighborhood Policy into a less successful story,” said Andi Cristea, adding that the assessments in Brussels depend on the way in which the problems in the financial-banking sector are overcome.

The MEP said things reached a critical moment and the state institutions must act. “The internal situation in Moldova is not the best one. Besides being complex and definitely less good than last year, it can be considered dramatic or less dramatic. I consider it is not important how the situation is perceived, but it is important what measures are taken to improve it. Regretfully, there are many items on the agenda and the Government’s role is certainly not a simple one,” he stated.

As to the 2014 EaP Progress Report for Moldova, Andi Cristea said that besides positive elements, it also contains matters that can be regarded as signals of alarm for the Moldovan authorities because an important moment for continuing and implementing reforms was lost.

The news conference was held within the visit paid to Chisinau by the leaders of the European Parliament’s Delegation to the Parliamentary Committee for Association between Moldova and the EU on April 7-9, 2015.
