With experience in the financial and banking sector, in public policies and accession to the European Union, Anca Dragu, freshly voted in as governor of the National Bank of Moldova, told TVR News that she wants to ensure the independence and integrity of the institution and that she wants to support Moldova in its European journey.

According to Anca Dragu, on the day she was appointed NBM governor (December 22), she attended the hearing in the Legal Committee of the Moldovan Parliament, then there was the plenary vote and after that she had the first meeting with members of the NBM leadership.

“I want to ensure the independence and integrity of the NBM, they are essential elements in an economy in a significant process of convergence, such as the economy of the Republic of Moldova. These are significant elements to attract the confidence of investors”, declared Anca Dragu.

When asked if she was thinking about a collaboration with the Romanian National Bank (BNR), Anca Dragu noted that such a partnership already exists, and already in the evening of her appointment she had discussions on the twinning programs with the BNR.

“These programs are ongoing and they will be intensified in the coming years, especially in light of Moldova’s European journey. In fact, this was the whole idea of this appointment: the (Moldovan government) started looking for people with expertise on EU accession to be appointed to the NBM”, said the governor.

Anca Dragu added that the NBM governor’s job was not initially on the table. “We started discussing a few months ago, but they were looking for a vice governor, for a member of the Supervisory Council, that’s how the discussions took place. But this situation appeared yesterday, prompting discussions about the position of governor”, declared Anca Dragu.

Anca-Dana Dragu was appointed on Friday, just one day after her predecessor, Octavian Armașu, was dismissed by Parliament for an apparent lack of progress in recovering the assets stolen in the 2014 bank fraud. A Romanian economist and politician, Dragu was granted the Moldovan citizenship shortly before her appointment.
