The referendum to amend the Constitution’s provisions concerning the election of the head of state is a trap for the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu, journalist Anatolie Golea said in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.
“Article 143 clearly defies the method of making amendments to the Constitution. This can be done only by Parliament. Holding a referendum is mandatory when the principle of permanent neutrality is to be reviewed and when it is about the sovereignty, independence and unity of the state. But in this case too, amendments to the Constitution are made by a law that can be adopted only by the legislative body,” stated the journalist.
According to him, the alliance partners inspired the Liberal leader with hope that his proposal could be implemented and the head of state would be elected by a simple majority of votes.
This was done in order to convince him to take part in the formation of the alliance. But the initiative to hold a referendum could be blocked by the Constitutional Court. “In spring, when the head of state will have to be elected, other variants will be discussed already, including the election of the President with the help of the Socialists or Communist. Persons willing to vote will be found then,” stated Anatolie Golea.
The journalist believes that even if it is successful, this referendum will be a lie. “We had a similar referendum in 2010. Even if it wasn’t validated, most of those who took part in the plebiscite said they are for the direct election of the head of state. Polls also show that 85-90% of the respondents want the President to be elected by the people. How will they persuade the people to vote for something with which they do not agree?” asked Golea.
He considers that Mihai Ghimpu accepted to take part in governance under the pressure of foreign partners. “The negotiations on the formation of the alliance started with a delay of one week. Pirrka Tapiola and the U.S. Ambassador had to intervene to convince Ghimpu to take part,” he stated.
