In the Transnistrian settlement process, the Russian Federation plays on the side of Transnistria. Owing to the position taken by Moscow, the Transnistrian dispute hasn’t been yet solved, analyst Anatol Taranu stated in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

The analyst noted that the public opinion in the EU and inside Moldova is focused on the idea that Russia does not play neutrally in the political settlement in Transnistria. And this is so evident that there are few arguments that could combat this thesis. “The Russians really play on the side of Transnistria and, owing to the position taken by Moscow, the Transnistrian dispute hasn’t been yet solved. It is a frozen conflict and it is not at all clear how it can be settled,” stated Anatol Taranu. According to him, when Russia tried to intervene actively in the political settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, the Republic of Moldova woke up overnight with the Kozak Memorandum, which was definitely a settlement formula to the detriment of the interests of the Republic of Moldova.

Ex-member of the Joint Control Commission Ion Leahu said one problem is to be solved within the 5+2 format and this is the political aspect of the status of the Transnistrian region within the political, economic and administrative framework of the Republic of Moldova. The rest of the problems are complementary. “We want first to solve all the social, economic and political problems of the Transnistrians and, at a certain moment, they will say that they do not need something else,” stated Ion Leahu.
