The bill with amendments to the law on civil status documents was submitted back for reexamination. The bill is a legislative initiative put forward by Liberal MP Ana Gutu. It allows every citizen of Moldova to choose their identity that is indicated in the civil status documents, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ana Gutu explained that the bill removes the restriction on every person’s right to ethnic and cultural self-determination. “Everyone will be able to renew the civil status documents and obtain a birth certificate from the registry office by a simple statement, saying that they want to be named Romanians. The national minorities in Moldova can name themselves as they want, while the given right of the majority population is restricted,” the MP said in Friday’s sitting of the legislature. Several lawmakers replied that the bill is aimed at establishing a nationalist state and forcing the children to have the same identity as their parents. Democrat MP Dumitru Diacov proposed postponing the examination of the bill. “We should not discuss a bill that causes so many emotions and considerable debate,” he said. Ultimately, it was decided to send back the bill to the relevant commission for reexamination.
