The president of honor of the National Unity Party (PUN) Traian Băsescu, the ex-President of Romania, will not become involved in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Moldova, said the party’s first vice president Ana Guțu. In the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel, the politician stated Traian Băsescu was very offended by the withdrawal of his Moldovan nationality, IPN reports.

She noted that they haven’t yet decided if the party will take part in the next elections or not. “We banked on the personality of Traian Băsescu because he could have headed our party’s list and the PUN would have played the role of a unifying force for all the Romanians. Following the witnessed developments, we have to very seriously think. We will discuss with colleagues from the local level and will take a definitive decision as to our participation in these elections,” stated the politician.

She noted the de facto involvement by Traian Băsescu in Moldovan politics would have meant a turning point, but this will not take place owing to the withdrawal of his nationality.

Ana Guțu said that from theoretical viewpoint, it would be ideal for all the political parties, except for the Democratic Party, to boycott the upcoming elections. “But this is not possible. Everyone prepares and starts the election campaign and eventually imagines how they could score a victory in these elections,” she noted. According to her, the people do not understand that the mixed electoral system is unsuitable even if Ukraine and Romania convinced themselves of this.

She said the inexistence of the second round of voting in the upcoming parliamentary elections that will take place based on the mixed electoral system makes the unionists ‘entry into Parliament  very difficult. Ana Guțu expressed her conviction that this electoral system will be again modified, at least after a new Parliament mandate.
