The theft of the US$1 billion from the banking system showed that the Republic of Moldova is a failed state, considers the leader of The Right Ana Gutu. According to her, the state has been robbed since 1991 and many clans embezzled money from Banca de Economii in the period. The President heads the Security Council and the crisis created by this theft deserves to be examined by this Council, the politician stated in the public debate “Specific features of presidential elections 2016: vision of parliamentary parties” of the series “What kind of President is society looking for? What society does the President need?”, held by IPN News Agency. Ana Gutu said that experts, especially from Romania and NATO, should be invited to examine this case and the assistance of experts from the U.S. and the EU should also not be rejected.

As regards the features of the presidential elections, the head of The Right said her greatest fear is that the voter turnout will not be at least 33% on October 30. “The people no longer want to vote someone and sign for no one as they consider that all the politicians are thieves,” she stated.

According to Ana Gutu, the stability reported by the government is a sham for the people because there are no human resources and potential in Moldova for the state to revive. “Those who go through villages and towns will see that only one in ten homes is inhabited, by an elderly man or woman. The situation is worrisome as the Republic of Moldova is depopulated,” she said.

As to the voters, Ana Gutu said the people in Moldova vote either rationally and informed or irrationally and misinformed. “Those who vote for Dodon usually have average studies. They do not vote geopolitically, but in a deluded way. Those who are informed choose at least the pro-Western geopolitical course. Regretfully, the notion of European integration has been discredited during the last few years. It was a nice period when we obtained a liberalized visa regime and signed the Association Agreement, but the conception of European integration collapsed especially after the theft of the US$1 billion. The union with Romania is the only possibility that remained,” she stated.

Ana Gutu added that 25 years of independence is not an important period from historical viewpoint and the Soviet past still has an impact. The people’s expectations are great. “They want a powerful future President, preferably man, who would solve all the problems, would ensure higher salaries and pensions and would jail those who are corrupt. But the Head of State will be unable to do all this. That’s why the political offer of the candidates is very great, but I’m afraid that the people will simply not go to vote. The people signed for candidates, some of them under pressure, but this does not mean that they will vote. There is a profound state of disappointment,” said the politician.

The September 22 public debate is the 61st installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
