Among all the GUAM countries, Moldova is most likely to become an EU member. This statement was made by Erhard Busek, Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, who is on a visit to Chisinau.
According to a press release from the Government, as part of a meeting with Premier Vasile Tarlev, Busek mentioned that the pro-European policy and activities within the regional organisations will significantly contribute to achieve Moldova’s objective to integrate in the European family. At the same time, Erhard Busek announced that the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe’s activity draws to a close and will assign its tasks to a new regional structure – Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), which will start its activity in 2008.
Premier Tarlev specified that Moldova backs the decision to create the Regional Cooperation Council and the main domains established for its activity, such as economic and social development, infrastructure etc., and it is determined to get involved.
During a meeting with President Vladimir Voronin, Erhard Busek mentioned that he really wants Moldova to be among the Balkan countries that successfully advanced to the way of the European integration, voicing his readiness to help Moldovan authorities in achieving this desideratum, says the presidential press release.
Vladimir Voronin stated in turn he shares the European high official’s opinion on the necessity to bring to good account Moldova’s chance to advance to the EU by consolidating the cooperation in the European south eastern space.
Dr. Erhard Busek is the Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe. He concurrently serves as Member of the Committee on Education in the European Union, Coordinator of the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative (SECI), Rector of Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, and Chairman of the Institute for the Danube and Central Europe.
