AMN will gain majority in the future Parliament, Urecheanu says

The president of the Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN) Party, Serafim Urecheanu, expressed his optimism concerning the results of his party in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. He told a press conference on Wednesday that AMN will be represented by at least 52 MPs in the future Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Urecheanu, after the 2009 polls the Parliament will also include the current ruling party (15 to 20 % of the popular vote). “We still have nostalgic people in the country”, Urecheanu explained. He added that “another party or maybe two, which cannot be named for sure” will also make it to the new parliament. Urecheanu announced that AMN will run by itself in the elections, but didn’t exclude the version of a potential collaboration with other parties. “The decision of the national council says that we will participate by ourselves in the elections, but I think that we could find common goals with other political forces”, Urecheanu stated. He added that that AMN considers a potential merger through the “self-dissolution of the small parties with little chances in the elections”. At the same time, the leader of AMN couldn’t tell the journalists which parties are seen as potential allies, insisting on the wording “the parties which are not communist”. “I am ready for a democratic future, for a European future of Moldova, but what is the guarantee that we won’t be betrayed?”, Urecheanu said. He also mentioned that he relies on the voters from the left bank of the Nistru River, stating that “not all of them are separatists, just like not everybody is a communist on the right bank”. Also, according to him, the political parties and leaders from Moldova will reach maturity before the elections, because “the situation in the country is very critical”. “The political leaders who are aware that Moldova is endangered will draw the conclusions and we will look together for the ways to strengthen our forces and overcome these crises”, the head of the Moldova Noastra Alliance mentioned. When asked about his opinion on the European Union’s suggestion for revising the decision on the increasing of the electoral threshold, Serafim Urecheanu asserted that the government party will reduce the threshold down to 5% “only when some of the political leaders will kneel to the comrade Voronin”. AMN will participate in the elections while excluding any possibility of a “war between the democratic-oriented forces”, and will stick to the idea of the accession to the European Union, accelerated economic growth and durable fight with poverty, Urecheanu concluded. AMN is the second largest parliamentary faction after the Communists’ Party.
