A transport aircraft has arrived at the Chisinau Airport on Saturday carrying 15 tons of drugs and medical consumables valued at $12 million donated to Moldova by the United States. The consignment is accompanied by a group of American medical volunteers who will share their experience with their Moldovan colleagues, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Welcoming the guests at the airport, Prime Minister Vlad Filat stressed that the donation includes vital medicines for the Moldovan health care system. “The aid donated by the American people includes drugs for serious and common diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, allergies and many others. The medicines and the consumables are to be distributed according to necessity among 62 hospitals and 42 medical centers. Over 100,000 citizens will benefit from this donation”, said the Prime Minister.
U.S. Ambassador to Moldova William Moser noted that in two decades of bilateral relations, the United States has donated nearly $240 million worth of medical aid to Moldova. The Ambassador said that this year's project is composed of three components: first, shipment of essential drugs and consumable; second, medical training in the field of palliative care; and third, small reconstruction projects at Clinical Hospital no.4 in Chisinau and at the Lipoveni Boarding School. “This is a gift from the American people to the Moldovan people and I hope that such actions will become permanent in Moldova”, said William Moser.
The American doctors and nurses will spend a week in Moldova where they will practice on a voluntary basis, sharing their experience and providing training where needed in a number of health care facilities in the country.
The aid is provided under the U.S. Department of State’s Operation Provide Hope humanitarian assistance program.
