The amendment of the Broadcasting Code is not sufficient to secure the information space of Moldova. For the purpose, the distribution of TV channels on the media market should be dealt with. The issues was developed in the talk show “Union Square” on Noroc TV channel, IPN reports.
Ion Terguta, spokesman for the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, said the bill to amend the Broadcasting Code contains half-measures as they didn’t want to fully solve the broadcasting problem. “The PLDM and PL, which voted for this law, were simply constrained because it was impossible not to vote. It is a national security issue first of all, but we are aware that these are half-measures. The law solved a problem, but does not address another important issue, which is the broadcasting market and internal propaganda, which is not smaller in volume,” he stated. According to Ion Terguta, the leader of the PDM, Vlad Plahotniuc and President Igor Dodon are the key beneficiaries of the broadcasting market as they own the largest part of TV channels in Moldova and this is the biggest problem in the broadcasting sector.
Security expert Rosian Vasiloi said that to secure Moldova’s information space, it is not enough to amend the Broadcasting Code. The bill does not specify what will happen to the information space of Transnistria and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, which is not right. “By ad-hoc measures, ignoring conceptual, strategic measures at national level, we cannot fully ensure national security. We should see, study and implement the best practices on this segment,” stated the expert.
Alexandru Cauia, chairman of the youth organization of the Democratic Party, said society associates the bill to amend the Broadcasting Code with Russian propaganda because the Russian media products are omnipresent on Moldova’s territory and this thing led to the division of society according to the principle of the political course. “We consider the securing of the information space is one of the imminent and current imperatives in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Alexandru Cauia. He also noted that if President Igor Dodon does not promulgate this law, as he earlier announced, this will be a violation of the Constitution.
The bill to amend the Broadcasting Code, proposed by the MPs of the Democratic Party and the European People’s Party of Moldova, was adopted by Parliament in two readings by the votes of 61 MPs of 101 on December 7.
