At least one consular office of Ireland could be opened in Chisinau, Ireland’s Ambassadors to Moldova with residence in Bucharest Derek Feely stated while in Moldova on a visit. The official welcomed Moldova’s intention to open an embassy in Dublin, IPN reports.
When making statement for the press at the end of the visit, Derek Feely said he makes effort to visit Moldova as often as possible and to improve the bilateral relations between the two states. Earlier, the diplomat had meetings with different Moldovan officials, among whom was the minister of foreign affairs, and he was happy to learn about Moldova’s intention to open an embassy in the capital of Ireland Dublin.
The goal of the visit is to understand, together with the other ambassadors, what support could be offered to Moldova in the electoral period. “We are not those who will monitor the elections and categorically do not want to intervene in this process, but we will try to offer the support that can be provided from this viewpoint. I’m very interested in seeing what is going on here so that later, based on the accumulated information and the meeting we had here, I could report to my authorities,” stated the ambassador.
Asked by journalists about eventual meetings with representatives of other parties than those of the electoral bloc ACUM, the diplomat said he was earlier contacted by representatives of parties, but logistically they could not organize meetings. He expressed his conviction that there will be other opportunities. They came on a one-day visit and could not adjust to the agendas of all those with whom they would like to have meetings.
“We are glad to meet with different political parties. You know that Ireland is a member of the European Union and therefore we are interested in meeting with political parties that have the same view or think in a similar way. We, Ireland, already convinced ourselves of the benefits of the membership in the European Union and for these reasons are indeed interested in keeping in touch with the pro-European parties here,” stated Derek Feely.
