Alternative Democratic Platform defends students with poor grades on Baccalaureate exams

Ten is equal to ten in math. In education yet, ‘10’ in Moldova is much lower than a grade of ‘10’ in other countries, considers university lecturer Andrei Munteanu, a founding member of the Alternative Democratic Platform. The blame is borne not by the students, but by the education system that is still Soviet-like, Andrei Munteanu said in a news conference on July 8, Info-Prim Neo reports. ”Because the quality of education is low, the quality of grades is much the same,” said Andrei Munteanu. He believes that the Baccalaureate exams should encourage the students to learn more, not discourage them. The lecturer said the parents spend large sums of money to bribe the teachers as they do not trust the system. “When the student is convinced he will not get a positive grade because the material is useful and irrelevant, he will be motivated to use time and energy for copying,” said Andrei Munteanu. According to him, the video surveillance system promoted by the Ministry of Education does not change the students’ level of knowledge. The number of those who offer bribe will only increase. Andrei Munteanu considers the solution is for the curriculum to be based on the present state of affairs, not on an imaginary situation that we want to have. He said he is in favor of replacing the repressive education system with a liberalized one and giving the students a new right – the right to be autodidacts.
