Approximately 38,000 Romanians in the Republic of Moldova cast their ballots in the European Parliament elections on May 26, show the data of Romania’s Central Election Bureau presented at about 9pm, after the closure of polling stations, IPN reports.
A number of 36 polling stations were established in Moldova for the EP elections. Even so, queues formed at some of the polling places and many of those waiting there could not vote before the stations closed. In his speech after the closing of polling places, the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis said things didn’t go well at all the polling stations. “We all saw the interminable queues at many polling places, especially in the diaspora. I thank the Romanians who had patience, some of whom a lot of patience, and ultimately could vote for the European Romania,” stated President Iohannis.
Over 2,000 Romanians in Moldova chose to vote at polling station No. 246 of the Consulate of Romania. The voter turnout was also high at polling places No. 258 in Ialoveni and No. 256 in Durlești, where over 1,500 people cast their ballots. About 16,000 people voted at the 12 polling stations opened in Chisinau.
The lowest turnout was in Carabetovca – 196 people, Giurgiulești – 312 and Florești - 452.
The voters aged between 45 and 64 were the most active ones, while those aged between 18 and 24 were the least active ones. More than 19,000 voters were males.
The voters in Moldova were among the most active ones, alongside those in Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK.
According to Romanian exit polls made public after 11pm, the National Liberal Party (PNL) won 25.7% of the vote, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) – 25.7%, the Alliance 2020 USR-Plus – 23.9%, the Pro Romanian Party – 5.7%, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) – 4.7%, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) – 5.4% and the People’s Movement Party (PMP) – 5.2%.
Over 18 million people were expected to vote and choose the 33 representatives of Romania in the European Parliament. Simultaneously, there was held a national consultative referendum on justice-related issued call by President Klaus Iohannis.
