Serafim Urecheanu, the leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Party, says that with the modification of the electoral legislation political parties could take part in elections on common platforms, or electoral blocs. Urecheanu does not rule out the possibility that this could be an option for the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) in the eventuality of early elections. However, AEI fellow colleagues are not very enthusiastic about this idea. Speaker Mihai Ghimpu, the leader of the Liberal Party, described Urecheanu's suggestion as “just an opinion” that could be discussed in certain circumstances. “I don't see why early elections should be held in the first place; secondly, we'll discuss it and we'll see. AEI was set up to exist during the lifetime of the current parliament. If early elections are held, it's clear that AEI will disappear”, said Mihai Ghimpu. Democrat leader Marian Lupu suggests his Alliance partners should wait until the consultations on the constitutional amendments are completed, and then talk about the next steps. Justice Minister Alexandru Tanase, who renounced his MP seat today, says he doesn't see any problem with admitting electoral blocs. “I think it will be possible. We, as a political party (Liberal Democratic Party – {Info-Prim Neo}), have always advocated two things: the lowering of the electoral threshold and permission for electoral blocs to exist. This is a democratic form which recognizes the freedom of political parties to assemble”, says Tanase.
