All the places available at the Children’s Infectious Diseases Hospital “Valentin Ignatenco” in Chisinau were filled. As the number of cases of COVID-19 among children grew, the authorities decided to reopen the COVID-19 wards at the given hospital, IPN reports.

The head of the General Social and Medical Assistance Division Boris Gîlca, in the ordinary meeting of officials of Chisinau services, said an upsurge in the number of COVID-19 cases among children has been witnessed in the recent past. The situation becomes more difficult when the cases of flu and of COVID-19 overlap and treatment is this way more problematic.

“We know that the counterparts from the Ministry of Health intend to reopen the COVID-19 wards at other national intuitions. Given the proportion and alarming tendency of cases of COVID-19 among children, we consider the wards or pediatric hospitals for COVID-19 in the northern and southern regions should be reactivated. It is not our remit, but this collegial advice as Chisinau is subject to the greatest pressure. It is not normal for children with COVID-19 to come from Briceni or Vulcănești to Chisinau. We must have reference hospitals in southern and northern Moldova,” stated Boris Gîlca.

The Omicron variant spreads faster than any other variant among children, as among grownups. However, the children develop primarily mild and moderate forms of disease.

As many as 389,000 cases of infection and 10,444 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in Moldova so far.
