The largest number of cases of flu were reported in the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti. This way, of the 270 cases of flu logged last week, 156 were recorded in Chisinau, secretary of state at the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection Aliona Serbulenko was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Issue of the day” on Canal2 TV channel.
“We speak now about an extended infection area as the epidemic process covers 7 territorial administrative units. Some of the districts haven’t witnessed cases of flu,” stated Aliona Serbulenko.
She noted that the 12 persons who died because of flu complications the current season hadn’t been vaccinated against flu. These persons also suffered from other diseases, such as diabetes and heart diseases.
Ludmila Bârcă, director of the Children’s Communicable Diseases Hospital, said the number of cases of viral infections increased now because the temperatures decreased earlier than the previous years. Infections lead to diminished local immunity and, respectively, to wider pathogenesis of viruses. “This was expected and is not something of a novelty for us,” stated Ludmila Bârcă.
According to her, the children are most sensitive to infections, primarily those aged one to three. “In the morning of February 1, we had 75 children with flu on the 100 beds of our institution, which is the only one intended for children with acute infectious diseases,” noted the director.
Acting director of the National Public Health Agency Nicolae Furtună told a news conference on February 1 that the flu epidemiological situation is of average intensity and follows an upward trend. The situation is not yet more difficult compared with the previous cold season and the previous years.
