Alexandru Tanase quits politics to become Constitutional Court Judge

“The Constitutional Court needs some changes which we, regretfully, have been waiting for too long”, outgoing Justice Minister Alexandru Tanase told Info-Prim Neo after the Cabinet on Friday endorsed his nomination for the post of judge of the Constitutional Court for a 6-year term. “This is first of all a personal decision. I've wanted this post very much and I've made no secret about it”, said Alexandru Tanase. He added that he regarded professionalism as the greatest asset of a constitutional judge: “Today we need judgments which are not based on superficial knowledge, but on profound understanding of constitutional, international and EU laws”. As of today, Tanase has 30 days to wind up his current chores at the Ministry, after which he will be sworn is as Constitutional Judge. Tanase will also relinquish his membership in the Liberal Democratic Party, at least formally: “Let me be frank – one can remain a member in a party as long as there are common views on the party's policies”.
