Moldova’s Parliament must amend the Election Code and the Law on Parties so as to do the electoral reform, the president of the Constitutional Court (CC) of Moldova Alexandru Tanase stated in the program “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel. According to him, the current electoral system of Moldova generates parties of Ltd. type, which do not have political beliefs, IPN reports.
According to the CC president, the parties play the political game not because of political convictions, but mainly in order to govern and this is a technical game. “The current electoral system does not allow a vote given to one smaller party to materialize as political decisions,” he stated.
Alexandru Tanase noted that the parties that hold political power in Moldova should implement a series of important reforms. “We must reform the political system and withdraw the electoral rolls. We should choose a system that will enable the people to vote for concrete candidates who would oblige the parties to look not for mascots, but for personalities with political weight,” he said.
The CC president also said that Moldova could borrow any of the three electoral systems that now exist in the Baltic states, which managed to generate a responsible political class that is absent in Moldova.
As to the presidential elections of this autumn, Alexandru Tanase said that no matter who wins them, this will be a victory of democracy. “Undoubtedly, the election of the President by the people’s vote brought to an end a sad period of secret agreements when the decisions were taken in a not very transparent way. Such a situation will no longer repeat. We managed to resolve a difficult issue,” he stated.
