It is crucial to prevent a total collapse of the economy in the Transnistrian region. If this happens, the Republic of Moldova may not be able to handle the challenge. This statement was made by Alexandru Flenchea, former Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, during the public debate “The Crisis in the Transnistrian Region – An Opportunity for Reintegration”, organized by the IPN news agency.

"The Transnistrian region is seen by everyone as a burden that we will eventually have to fully bear and support economically. Right now, that is not the case. But this could become a reality," noted the former Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration.

According to Flenchea, urgent measures are needed to sustain the Transnistrian economy.

"If the current economic and energy crisis is not resolved soon, within a few months there is a risk that the region’s economy will completely disappear. At that point, the authorities in Chisinau will have to 'adopt' 350,000 citizens from the Transnistrian region," Flenchea added.

The former Deputy Prime Minister believes that all responsibility lies with Chișinău. The Republic of Moldova must take the necessary measures to restart businesses in the region so that people can return to work.

"Even now, a large part of the population there is at home without work, receiving only two-thirds of their salary because the economy has come to a halt. With political support, the Transnistrian region could generate income and pay taxes, thus participating in the reintegration process," he stated.

The public debate “The Crisis in the Transnistrian Region – An Opportunity for Reintegration” is organized as part of the project “IPN News Agency for Social Cohesion and a Pro-European Moldova”, funded by IMS.
