The legislation of the Republic of Moldova must be amended to prohibit the senior officials of the country from holding a citizenship other than the Moldovan one. This is the opinion of Alexandr Stoianoglo, who is running in the presidential election of October 20. Stoianoglo admits that he has Romanian citizenship, but says that he is ready to renounce it if such amendments are adopted, IPN reports.

“The obtaining of Romanian citizenship by me was a transparent decision, taken in an apolitical context, and I never hid it. The fact of holding dual citizenship is also indicated in the documents submitted to the Central Election Commission,” said Alexandr Stoianoglo, former prosecutor general of the Republic of Moldova.

The candidate for the position of President insists that about 1.5 million Moldovan citizens obtained another citizenship (Romanian, Russian, Bulgarian) to facilitate their access to the labor market in other states, for family reasons or to obtain particular social and economic benefits. “The states that offered these opportunities deserve to be treated with respect,” noted the candidate.

Alexandr Stoianoglo’s comment comes after Ziarul de Gardă wrote that he is also a citizen of Romania. Earlier, the leader of the Party of Socialists, which supports Alexandr Stoianoglo in the upcoming election, said the fact that the President of the Republic of Moldova can also hold the citizenship of another state, referring to President Maia Sandu, is “nonsense”.
