Radu Albot became the first Moldovan tennis player who managed to win a game at a Grand Slam tournament. At the US Open, he led David Ferrer, who ranks seventh in the world.
After defeating Ferrer in the first set 6-4, Albot lost the next set 5-7. He then lost the next two sets 1-6, 0-6 as he no longer could keep up with the Rolland Garros finalist of 2012. In the past, the Spanish player took even the third position in the ATP rankings, while Albot has now his best position – 85th.
“My goal not long ago was to join the top 100 tennis players of the world. Now I’m on the 85th position already. As to the US Open, I’m proud of taking part in this tournament. I hope to return and to achieve even better results,” Radu Albot stated for IPN.
The Moldovan tennis player will yet compete in the doubles together with Ianco Tipaservic of Serbia, who was Number 8 in the world for a period. Their opponents in the first round are Aleksandr Buryi of Belarus and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
