The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry forecasts that the crop of cereals and legumes this year will be 1.4 million tonnes.
The good harvest will provide the necessary quantity of seeds for the autumn sowing, the consultant of the Agriculture Ministry’s Phytotechnology, Seminology, Horticulture and Sapling and Seedling Growing Department, Valeriu Masleanschi told Info-Prim Neo.
Masleanschi said that about 387,000 hectares of winter and spring wheat and 127,000 hectares of winter and spring rice have been sowed for this year’s reserve. Over 12,600 hectares have been sowed with peas, while about 348,000 hectares with winter and spring rape. Other types of crops are cultivated on approximately 5,700 hectares of land.
Specialists consider that the same areas of agricultural land will be sowed this autumn, but the wheat fields will be decreased by about 20,000 hectares, while the rape fields will be increased by about 70,000 lei.
The harvesting of this year’s cereal crops will start soon. The farms will organize the work in two or three shifts, depending on the rate of the reaping and the quality of the cereals.
Some 400,000-450,000 tonnes of food wheat are needed in the state reserve in order to insure the country’s food security.
