The drivers who will have an aggressive behavior risk being penalized with fine, penalty points and even arrest. A bill to amend and supplement the Contravention Code was adopted by Parliament in the final reading on March 2, IPN reports.
One of the bill authors Sergiu Sarbu said the bill provides that the overtaking of a column of vehicles obliged to stop or slow down when close to an intersection, sudden braking or abusive honking, threats or obscene gestures in traffic will represent manifestations of aggression while driving.
The drivers who will travel successively from one lane to another to overtake vehicles will be penalized, as will be those who will repeatedly or continuously approach excessively a car from behind or laterally and those who will brake suddenly without reason when returning to the lane, immediately after overtaking a vehicle, making the driver of this to change the direction or brake suddenly to avoid a collision. Travelling back in order to intimidate other traffic participants will also be punished.
Under the bill, the aggressive behavior of drivers will be penalized with a fine of 75 to 100 conventional units, with the imposition of five penalty points, or 20 to 40 hours of community service or 15 days of arrest, in all the cases with or without the withdrawal of the driver’s license for a period of six months to one year.
The same actions, if they are committed in group or repeatedly in the course of the same calendar year or generate the risk of an accident, will be punished with a fine of 100 to 150 conventional units and six penalty points, or 40 to 60 hours of community service or 15 to 30 days of arrest, in all the cases with or without the withdrawal of the driver’s license for a year to two years.
A conventional unit in the case of the Contravention Code is equal to 20 lei, but this will rise to 50 lei on March 16, when new provisions take effect.
