After boarding school, on the street, but with expensive mobile phones

The young orphans often have to live on the street, in the cold and without food, after they finish the boarding school. The lump sum of 10,000 lei offered by the state is most often spent on useless things as they do not know how to manage their incomes. Liliana Samcov, director of the Edinet Public Association “Demos”, considers that somebody should monitor the process and help the young people to make a correct choice.

“Most of them spend the money on expensive mobile phones and computers and goods that are not basic essentials. Thus, they enter the winter without clothes and shoes. They come to our organization in non-warm clothes and we give them the most necessary things,” Liliana Samcov said in a news conference at IPN.

After graduation from education intuitions and until employment, the young people are monitored by no service. Not always the knowledge they gain at the boarding school are enough for them to start an independent adult life.

“When the young people come to us, we monitor them and know what their life is like after years. Those who are neglected by the state and the social worker seek help from the civil society, which offers them temporary accommodation,” added Liliana Samcov.

The young people without shelter and without a stable job who come to “Demos” are involved in the Assisted Social Dwelling service. During two months, social workers monitor them to see how they manage their incomes and teach them to make savings. For a large part of these young people, the Assisted Social Dwelling becomes a long-term one. With the assistance of a number of international organizations, “Demos” helped socially deprived young people to acquire a permanent home.

Another problem besides the absence of dwellings is the lack of residence visa that is often required when applying for a job. The competent authorities refuse to register the domicile of the young people at the temporary accommodation center. Liliana Samcov said that in order to help the young people in such a situation, the center’s employees register the domicile at their personal dwellings so that the young people can have a temporary visa.
