After 2-3 years number of pensioners in Moldova might double or even triple

By 2008-2010, the retirement age in Moldova will be reached by the generations of 1948-1950, which are 2-3-fold more numerous than previous ones, the data of the International Development Agency of Unites Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA). According to the data of the agency, the general age of Moldova’s population is increasing. In 2004, the persons aged 60 and more constituted 14% of the population (or every 7th person), compared with 12.3% in 1990. According to international indexes, values higher than 12% show demographical ageing of population. As result, over-solicitation of social insurances system is forecasted, which will negatively influence the social-economical situation of the country. As well UNFPA informs that the population from the rural zone are ageing faster and that that of the urban space. This factor tensions even more the income sources in rural spaces, as well as health protection and education systems, which are already over-solicited. Starting April 1, 2006, the average pension in Moldova constitutes MDL 459.47 (USD 35.7). About 650 thousand persons benefit from age-limit pensions. In 2005, pensions were indexed by 18.2%, in 2004 – by 22.3%, in 2003 – by 19.3%. In light of population’s ageing in Moldova, international experts suggest the state, civil society and donor agents to strengthen the normative framework in order to ensure access to high quality social services for all citizens, regardless of their age. As well, national policies should capitalize the potential of old persons, in order to ensure a sustainable bridge between generations and to perpetuate professional quality and systems of support between generations. UNFPA supports countries in using information on population, in elaborating and implementing poverty reduction policies and programs.
