The leaders of the parliamentary groups of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) are confident that the group of Socialists in Parliament will vote for the presidential candidate Nicolae Timofti. On the other hand, the group’s leader Igor Dodon said they will take a decision after they have a meeting with Nicolae Timofti today or tomorrow. Discussions on the issue were held during the program “In Profunzime” on Pro TV channel, Info-Prim Neo reports. ”The decision of the group of Socialists is important for the political future of their party that is now at the incipient stage,” said the head of the Liberal-Democratic group Valeriu Strelet. According to him, the Dodon group does not have arguments against voting for Nicolae Timofti. The leader of the Democratic faction Dumitru Diacov said the AEI found a candidate that meets all the conditions imposed by the Dodon group. “I think it is normal for Nicolae Timofti to meet with the Dodon group,” he stated, adding the AEI creates all the conditions for the unaffiliated MPs to be near the lawmakers of the ruling alliance. Contacted by phone, Igor Dodon said during the program that he officially found out that Nicolae Timofti was the candidate for the presidency on March 12, but he had known about this candidate from his sources for several days. “It is important that after months of discussion the conclusion was reached that we can elect the President only if the candidate is politically unaffiliated,” said Igor Dodon. He also said that the same day he had a phone conversation with Nicolae Timofti, during which they agreed to have a meeting on Tuesday or on Wednesday. Afterward, on March 15, the Party of Socialists will make public its decision. “We want to find out his opinion about Moldova’s present and future,” stressed Igor Dodon. On March 12, the AEI presented jurist Nicolae Timofti as the official candidate for the post of head of state. The presidential elections will take place on March 16.
