The Alliance for European Integration (AEI) may abandon the idea of holding a constitutional referendum to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state, the chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said in the program “Replica” on Prime TV, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The AEI may decide not to hold the referendum. I don’t know for sure yet,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.
He also said that the referendum is not the only solution, adding that if his colleagues from the AEI decide not to organize the plebiscite, the Liberal Party will comply. But if the referendum is held, the question should be: “Are you for electing the President in Parliament by a majority of votes?”
Mihai Ghimpu said he will propose naming the leader of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin as Prime Minister, the Liberal-Democratic leader Vlad Filat as President and the chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu as Speaker.
Earlier, the leaders of the AEI announced that a constitutional referendum will be held by the end of April.
