The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) gave a joint press briefing on September 3, which is the last day of the referendum campaign. They urged the people to vote in favor of amending Article 78 of the Constitution in the September 5 referendum, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Only two days have left until the people will be able to make use of their power. We call on all the Moldovan people to take part in the referendum and vote “in favor” so that we could later create functional state institutions and pave the way for Moldova’s European integration,” said Acting President Mihai Ghimpu, the leader of the Liberal Party.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, said the country’s future will be decided on September 5. “We made a concerted effort and can now offer the people the possibility of participating in the plebiscite and voting “in favor”,” he said.
First Deputy Head of Parliament Serafim Urecheanu, the leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance, said the referendum will enable to overcome the constitutional crisis and will show the voters they can bring about changes. “We urge you to be disciplined and vote in the referendum,” he stated.
The chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said on September 5 the people will have again the chance of voting for direct election of the head of state and there will be created mechanisms that will prevent situations when Parliament cannot fulfill its duties.
On September 5, voters will be asked whether they are in favor or against amending the Constitution so that it allows for direct election of the President of Moldova. For the referendum results to be validated, the turnout must be 1/3 of the voters.
