The public association “Piligrim-Demo” of ATU Gagauzia has launched an advocacy campaign entitled “Transparent power is more credible” that is aimed at promoting the bill called generically “Law on Transparency”. The campaign will include a series of local and national events, meetings with deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and field trips to collect signatures in support of the bill.

“Piligrim-Demo” executive director Mihail Sirkeli told a news conference at IPN that the goal of the campaign is to convince the deputies of the People’s Assembly of the necessity of engaging the people from the region in the decision-making process and of adopting the “Law on Transparency”. The bill was drafted in April 2016 by a working group that involved local and national experts and local deputies, on the initiative of “Piligrim-Demo”. The proposal was registered with the People’s Assembly by deputy Ecaterina Jecova at the end of this July.

Within the campaign, meeting will be staged with people to inform these about the importance of transparency in the decision-making process. Signatures will be collected in favor of a petition by which to demand that the “Law on Transparency” should be adopted. Two video clips about the campaign’s message will be broadcast on TV.

Mihail Sirkeli said “Piligrim-Demo” supports the inhabitants of Gagauzia in their wish to know more about the work of the authorities and to take part in the decision-making process. The given wish is found in the answers given in the multiple surveys carried out by the Association in 2015 and 2016. The studies showed that most of the respondents do not know about the decisions adopted by the authorities, but would like to know more and to take part in taking decisions.

The campaign will start on October 3 and will continue until the “Law on Transparency” is adopted. The campaign “Transparent power is more credible” is carried out with support from the Freedom House.
