Adviser to Transnistrian leader says reduction in voter turnout in the region is unacceptable

The Supreme Soviet in Tiraspol proposes decreasing the voter turnout required to validate the elections from 25% to 15%. Ana Volcova, state adviser to the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov, said that such an initiative is unacceptable for Transnistria, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent reports. “Fewer people have taken part in elections during the last few years. But this is not a reason for reducing the turnout,” Volcova said. Speaking about the amendments to the electoral system, namely the gradual introduction of party-list proportional representation system, Ana Volcova said that the majority system turned out to be effective. “There are no reasons to change it,” she stressed. The constitutional commission is considering creating a bicameral parliament, Ana Volcova added.   A majority election system is now applied in the Transition region – the candidate that polls the largest number of votes in uninominal constituencies wins the elections.
