Civic activist Oleg Brega has released a video stating his intention to run as an independent in Moldova’s Parliamentary elections on February 24, 2019. The activist stated that he is running in order to influence the public agenda, and to advocate for human rights during electoral debates, if he decides to participate in them. The statement was made on the “Sfatul Țării” show on 10TV, IPN reports.

Oleg Brega claims that the double-dealing attitude of Moldovan politicians must change, regardless of their political affiliation. “People say one thing and do another. I would like to be an earnest dignitary, and if I ask for transparency, then transparency is what I expect, both in sessions of public interest and in those of lesser public interest. I would also like for the mass media to participate at coalition negotiations, to make sure there are no additional secret protocols that bring so much harm afterwards,” said Oleg Brega.

The activist says he is not interested to join the PAS–PPPDA–PLDM coalition in the upcoming elections, and that he would examine this possibility only if more political parties and trustworthy civil society leaders join it. Meanwhile, Oleg Brega says he would be willing to step down in favor of a candidate who shares his values, but has higher chances of success.

Should he get into the Parliament, Oleg Brega says he wouldn’t support any government, as he would have to bear responsibility for that government’s actions. “I would prefer to be a free MP, and to vote each bill according to my conscience, not according to gang, coalition, or majority interests,” the activist elaborated.

However, the activist reckons relevant institutions might not even let him register as a candidate for the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
