Government officials, combatants, politicians and ordinary people took part in a number of events held to commemorate the victims of the Nistru War of 1991on March 2. The people who came together in the central square of Chisinau went on a march to the Monument to the Grieving Mother at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”, where they laid flowers, IPN reports.
Prime Minister Pavel Filip took part in the commemoration meeting. “It is important not to allow such conflicts to repeat and claim lives as the life of a human is above everything. We must have a balanced approach to the settlement of this conflict. Moldova’s integrity and sovereignty must be kept by a powerful political class and by powerful state authorities,” stated the Premier. He assured that the Government will take measures to support the combatants and improve their living standards.
Head of Parliament Andrian Candu published a message on a social networking site, saying the armed conflict on the Nistru is a sad page in Moldova’s history. “The sovereignty and integrity of our country were in danger and the fact that Moldova is now a free state is due to all those who sacrificed their lives. We must respect our heroes and remember them,” he said.
The chairman of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon, together with MPs, councilors and supporters of the party, laid flowers on the bridge in Vadul lui Voda town to remember those killed in battle. The Socialists have commemorated this event at the place where the conflict started for the fifth year.
Approximately 30,000 Moldovans took part in the Nistru war. About 300 combatants and over 400 civilians were killed, while several hundred soldiers were hurt in it.
