The Supreme Council of Magistrates in a week will decide who will hold the post of president of the Supreme Court of Justice on an interim basis. The term in office of the current president of the Court Ion Muruianu expires on March 29, when the Supreme Council of Magistrates is set to hold a meeting, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Council‘s president Nicolae Timofti said that under the legislation the post is held on an interim basis until a new president of the Supreme Court of Justice is named. “The contest to fill the post will be held after it falls vacant. It will happen on March 29, when the Council will come together. The issue will be discussed in the meeting of the Council, which is empowered to select one of the candidates. After it chooses a candidate, the legislative body is to confirm him to post. If Parliament rejects the candidate, the Council is to propose a new candidate,” Nicolae Timofti said. Asked by the reporters if it’s true that Supreme Court of Justice judge Constantin Gurschi intends to withdraw his candidacy, Nicolae Timofti said officially they received no resignation yet. Five judges have applied for the post of Supreme Court of Justice president. They include the current president Ion Muruianu, acting president of the Penal Board of the Supreme Court of Justice Raisa Botezatu, Supreme Court of Justice judge Constantin Gurschi, and member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates Nicolae Timofti. Judge at the European Court of Human Rights Mihai Poalelungi withdrew his candidacy.
