The achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for Moldova means improving peoples’ lives, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Nicola Harrington-Buhay stated for IPN on the occasion of the marking of 1,000 days to go on these goals.

The importance of creating an inclusive society, by well-though-out actions, is the most important conclusion of the MDG global program. Nicola Harrington-Buhay said there are inequality increasing trends all over the world, not only between the states, but also inside the states. “A county can develop and become a model, but it does not necessarily mean that development applies to everyone. This refers to Moldova too,” she stated.

The problems faced by the people in Moldova are the same as everywhere else in the world. The polls conducted by the UN in 60 countries, including Moldova, confirm this. Among the problems mentioned by those polled were the respect for the human rights, the guaranteeing of a workplace and access to education.

Since 2000, when the MDG program was launched, Moldova has learned from the experience of other countries and was an example for others as well. The cooperation between the ministries of health, justice and social protection in migration problems or in identifying persons who do not enjoy health services are the areas in which Moldova shares its experience with other countries, said the UN Resident Coordinator.

In order to achieve better results, the UN supports the importance of presenting statistical data by categories, including at regional, not only national level. Another aspect is bringing the services closer to the people, especially in rural areas. The financial aspect is also essential. Emphasis is laid on attraction of private investments, besides those from the public sector, as it was done in the case of the Energy and Biomass Project.

The United Nations and its partners on April 5 marked the milestone of 1,000 days to the end of 2015 – the target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. According to the last report on the MDGs in Moldova, there are goals and targets which require more efforts and action, including the enrollment in primary school, access to services for the most vulnerable children, combating of tuberculosis, and environment protection.
