The wastewater treatment station in Chisinau municipality works in a normal regime, the public utility SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” (ACC) said following complaints about the unpleasant smell made by people living near the station. The company assures the inhabitants of Chisinau that there are no preconditions for this smell to spread as the whole technological process is respected, IPN reports.

In a press release, ACC says the mud collection works during the last few years have been performed only in the cold period of the year so as to minimize the unpleasant smell emitted during the transportation of mud. This year, the works were started in November and closed in mid-January. About 77,000 cubic meters of mud were transported overall.

Though the geotubes are a temporary solution for storing the mud, these enabled to reduce the area of mud platforms from 37 hectares to about 4 hectares. This way, the pestilential smell from the mud processing platforms was essentially reduced.

In another development, ACC said the State Hydrometeorology Service is annually contracted to systematically measure the concentration of pollutants in the air near the station. It also permanently monitors the process of elimination of suspensions in the wastewater and the biochemical consumption of oxygen.

In accordance with the Priority Investments Program financed with the loans provided by the EBRD and EIB, ACC plans to reconstruct and modernize the wastewater treatment station by building mud processing installations. The given works will be performed in 2017 and will cost about €28 million.
