SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” (ACC) has warned that Ukraine intends to build six hydroelectric plants on the Nistru River. The supplier says the neighboring state’s intention will considerably decrease the level of water and this will make the supply of drinking water to Chisinau municipality problematic, IPN reports.
In a press release, the company says this process could also affect the quality of water supplied to the residents of Chisinau. As the quantity of water downstream of Novodnevstrovsk town in Ukraine will be measured, the risks could be rather big. The fact that the water at these hydroelectric plants will be treated thermally is also very dangerous. Thus, the temperature of water downstream of Novodnevstrovsk and from the new plants could be technical, not drinking.
The administration of “Apa-Canal Chisinau” assures that there is now no danger that the inhabitants of Chisinau will remain without running water. Currently, the level of water in the Nistru River is 9.2 m. This process allows supplying water at normal parameters. Over 200,000 cubic meters of water are supplied daily.
Based on a number of feasibility studies carried out earlier, the supplier suggests a series of measures, such as to build a number of dams on the Nistru, to dig wells with local spring and to identify alternative sources of water. If need be, the water reserves in the company’s 42 water reservoirs will be increased.
ACC also said that Ukraine manages the hydraulic basin of the Nistru without coordinating the actions with Moldova. This resulted in floods in 2008 and 2010 and in a hydrological drought in 2015 and 2016.
